Stop memorising. Start retrieving.
Staring at a grid of products and hoping they sink in is the slow road. Memory sticks when you pull a fact out under a little pressure, not when you read it for the tenth time. That's why flashcards beat charts, and why a game with a timer beats flashcards: every time you fetch "7 × 8" from memory to do something — beat a clock, land a hit, keep a streak — the fact gets a little stickier. Retrieval is the workout. Comfortable re-reading is not.
Short and daily beats long and occasional
Ten minutes a day will bury a ninety-minute Sunday cram every single time. The tables live in long-term memory, and long-term memory is built by spacing — small doses, often, with sleep in between. Pick a slot you'll actually keep: the bus ride, the ad break, the five minutes before dinner. Consistency is doing the heavy lifting here, not intensity.
Attack the tables in the right order
Don't grind 1 to 12 in a straight line. Knock out the easy anchors first — ×1, ×2, ×5, ×10 — and suddenly half the grid is done. Then use what you know: ×4 is double the ×2, ×6 is ×5 plus one more group, ×9 has the finger trick and the digits-add-to-nine pattern. That leaves only a handful of genuinely tricky ones (hello, 7 × 8). Spend your extra reps there instead of re-drilling facts you already own.
Make the reps something they'll come back to
The fastest way to learn the tables is to do a lot of reps — and the only way to do a lot of reps is to not hate them. In Math Max, every multiplication problem is a punch in a fight, so the reps pile up while it feels like play. Set it to multiplication, pick a fighter, and let the brawl do the drilling. Throw in some division and you're practising the inverse facts at the same time, which is where the tables finally lock in for good.
