Add and subtract left to right
School taught you to start from the right and carry. Your head prefers the opposite. For 47 + 38, add the tens first (70), then the ones (15), then combine: 85. You get a rough answer almost instantly and refine it, which is exactly how mental math is supposed to feel. Subtraction loves the same trick, plus "counting up": 83 − 67 is easier as "how far from 67 to 83?" — three to 70, thirteen more to 83, so 16.
Multiply by rounding, then fixing
Ugly multiplications get friendly when you round. 19 × 6 is just 20 × 6 minus one 6: 120 − 6 = 114. 48 × 5 is 50 × 5 minus 2 × 5: 250 − 10 = 240. And ×5 has a shortcut of its own: multiply by 10 and halve. 5 × 86 is half of 860, which is 430. Once you start rounding to the nearest friendly number and patching the difference, big products stop being scary.
Percentages are reversible
The trick nobody tells you: x% of y equals y% of x. 8% of 25 looks annoying; flip it to 25% of 8, which is just 2. Done. Build from 10% (move the decimal one place) and 1% (move it two). Need 15%? Take 10% and add half of it. Need a tip on $46? 10% is $4.60, half again is $2.30, so 15% is about $6.90. No phone required.
Squares and the difference-of-squares shortcut
To square a number near a round one, use (a−b)(a+b) = a² − b². 19² is 20 × 18 + 1 = 361. 52² is 50 × 54 + 4 = 2704. Numbers ending in 5 are even cleaner: 35² is 3 × 4 then tack on 25, giving 1225. These aren't magic — they're just algebra you can do in your head once the pattern is familiar.
The habit that turns tricks into instincts
Knowing a shortcut and reaching for it under pressure are different skills. The bridge between them is reps — using the tricks often enough that they fire before you think. That's the quiet reason a game helps.
